Bénédicte Monicat

Professional Bio
Bénédicte Monicat was a Professor of French and Francophone Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. After earning degrees from the Université Paris-Sorbonne and the University of Maryland, she joined Penn State's Department of French and Francophone Studies in 1990 and soon became a pioneering scholar in 19th-century French literature, women's writing, and travel literature. Her work shaped the fields of gender and literary studies, and she mentored countless students, leaving a lasting legacy. During her 35 years at Penn State, she was awarded the Most Inspiring Teacher Award (1993-1994), the Most Premier Faculty Award (2006), the Outstanding Mentor Award (from Women in French, 2018), and the Service to the College Award (2021) She also served as Department Head and later as Acting Head of the School of Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
