WGSS Students win Essay Contest

Congratulations to Indira Bailey and Elizabeth Catchmark for winning The Terry Kershaw Student Essay competition, sponsored by the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS).

Bailey won 1st place in the graduate division for her essay “Teaching While Black: The Construction of Race, Class and Gender.” Bailey is a dual-title doctoral candidate in Art Education and in Women’s Studies. Her research is centered on the marginalization of Black women in visual art.

Catchmark won 2nd place in the undergraduate division for her essay “Reflections in Black: How America Reads Obama’s Race.” She was honored at the NCBS 41st Annual Conference, held this March in Houston, Texas.
